Project Brief:
Prototype design of a futuristic house for a family of four in Dubai
Program:
- Living Room
- Majlis
- Bedrooms
- Toilets
- Kitchen
- Servants’ Quarters
Design Ideation:
Our journey began with a plot of land, a rectangle set within a landscape of possibilities. Instead of constraining space, we welcomed it, converging the side setbacks into the central courtyard. The intent in disrupting the setback norm is to create an inward looking ‘retreat’, where the family can unwind at all times in the tranquil garden animated with falling water curtains, water bodies and vegetation which act as microclimate modifiers creating a comfortable outdoor environment. The townhouse typology thus created generates opportunities for fostering community ties at the urban morphological level.
Its spatial organization, symmetric and mirroring, speaks of balance, ease of use and simplicity in construction. The construction technology envisioned for the house is a combination of 2D and 3D prefabricated modular system assembled on site, There are 3 sizes of modules for the service block units, the formal living dining, the Majlis, the home theatre and lobby and the bedrooms respectively. The bedrooms for future expansion can be easily plugged into the core of the house. The Mashrabiya screen on the front and the rear and the space frame above the courtyard are bespoke elements made out of painted bamboo which lend a crafted character to the house.
